Kentucky begins its fifth year of Common Core in the public schools, but the college-going rate is flat or declining

Common Core implications?

There were a lot of very interesting revelations in yesterday’s meeting of the Kentucky Board of Education. Among them was this disturbing comment from Robert King, the president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, which oversees all the state’s public two- and four-year postsecondary institutions.

There you have it – straight from an authority. As Kentucky enters its fifth academic year since the implementation of Common Core State Standards testing in the 2011-12 term, while the supposed number of students ready for college has increased (search “college and career” in this blog for more about those problematic statistics), the reality is that – for whatever reason – college-going in Kentucky is not increasing.

Maybe those readiness numbers are not impressing our students.
