Leadership run amok in Lexington

By Dan Ewing

The anti-property rights rhetoric used by proponents of the attempted takeover of the Kentucky-American Water Company by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) deliberately obscures the truth, deflecting attention from critical issues.

The election returns in the May primary suggest that such tactics are not working, as voters mostly opted for candidates who opposed LFUCG's plan to plunder its water company. It is not true our democratic process selects the best candidates; it simply provides citizens a non-violent process of casting out ineffective leadership!

Whether enough candidates who favor allowing Kentucky-American to remain in the private sector will win in November and change the governments course of action remains to be seen. Consultant George Raftelis has already siphoned off $179,000, which is $100,000 more than originally stipulated in his contract to estimate the value of the water company.

As if conducting a diversionary attack, former Mayor H. Foster Pettit, now representing For Local Ownership of Water (FLOW), is leading an effort to criticize Kentucky-American Water's recent request for a rate increase.
